Participants must be older than the age of 12 years on the day of the Discovery 947 Ride Joburg. Special dispensation may be applied for in writing to the Race Office for younger entrants.
The Early Bird entry fee is R504.50 until 31 March 2019. Thereafter the 2019 entry fees of R540.00 (incl. 15% VAT) will apply. The entry fee includes VAT and the CSA rider levy of R10.00. Entries close on 4 October 2019 or when entry capacity is reached. ENTRY FEES ARE NON REFUNDABLE. Online entries without payment are not saved and are NOT valid entries. An entry is not considered valid until payment has been received. No protest will be entertained in this regard.
Every cyclist shall ride carefully and with due regard to the safety of other cyclists and road users.
Participants must obey the instructions of the traffic officers and marshals and comply strictly with the rules of the road, save where authorised by traffic officers and marshals. In particular, participants are warned to keep to the left of the road and to remain on the sections of the road demarcated for them. Participants may be required to stop at certain intersections on the instruction of authorised marshals.
A cyclist may not use a personal music system, radio communication device or cellular telephone whilst Cycling. CSA officials and the event reserves the right to disqualify any rider that contravenes this rule.
Only conventional bicycles and conventional tandems may be ridden. BMX bicycles and tandems with disc or covered wheels are deemed to be conventional. Bicycles and tandems with fairing or attachments to improve airflow, recumbent, extended bicycles, tricycles, machines known as human powered vehicles (HPVs) and other similar machines are deemed to be unconventional and are not permitted to enter without the express permission of the organisers. Please apply for special dispensation in writing to the Race Office.
Bicycles, tandems and other machines fitted with unconventional handlebars including triathlon-bars, aerobars, clip-ons, prayer-bars, turned-up-bars and cow-bars are not permitted in any category. ATB bar-ends are permitted on Mountain Bikes.
Any participant who is in any doubt about whether his bicycle, tandem or machine is suitable to be ridden in the event and, if so, in which category, is advised to contact the organisers well beforehand.
E-Bikes may be ridden only if the participant selects the E-bike category when entering online.
The definition which distinguishes E-bikes permitted to enter this race are as follows:
the pedal-assist, i.e. the motorised assistance that only engages when the rider is pedalling, cuts out once 25 km/h is reached (ie no permanently powered bicycles), AND
when the motor produces maximum continuous rated power of not more than 250 watts
An E-bike cyclist may not start or attempt to start before his/her designated start group. Any cyclist who does so will be disqualified. A cyclist may move down to a slower start group without being penalised.
E-bikes may not be ridden in any racing categories (CSA licensed categories) / qualify for any prizemoney. E-Bike results will be marked as such in Racetec results and may not be used for seeding for other cycling events.
Members of Cycling SA who participates in sanctioned events on an E-Bike will also forfeit any potential claim for medical assistance, as the use of E-Bikes falls outside of the scope of the federation’s rules and regulations.
Participants riding E-bikes must adhere to all the rules of the race.
Should an E-bike participant change his entry to / from an E-bike category without properly applying for such a change through the Race Office, he / she will be disqualified. No protest will be entertained in this regard.
The Road and Technical Commissions of Cycling South Africa have considered the communique from the UCI and have decided to permit riders to use disc brakes on road bicycles while participating in road racing events. As advised by the UCI, the use of disc brakes in road races will be applicable to all racing categories with the specific exclusion of Junior Men and Women, Youth Men and Women and the younger age groups (i.e. Under 19 and younger). This ruling will be applied to the 947 Cycle Challenge 2019.
RaceTec is the official timing company of the Discovery 947 Ride Joburg 2019. It is compulsory for every cyclist participating to wear a valid RaceTec timing chip linked to your personal profile. You may not ride with someone else’s race number or RaceTec timing chip. Any participant that does not wear a RaceTec Chip will not be allowed into the start pen on race day or will have to purchase a new chip at the start. No protest will be entertained in this regard. RaceTec Chips can be purchased during the online entry process or directly from RaceTec on 087 820 7223 or firstname.lastname@example.org. Timing queries must be addressed to RaceTec or Race Office no later than 31 January 2020 for consideration. http://www.racetec.co.za/terms/.
Only cyclists with a valid Cycling South Africa (CSA) license and the required seeding index will be permitted to start in the Elite, U23, Junior (U17), Juvenile (U15) categories for both ladies and men. Restricted gears apply for Juniors and Juveniles, as per CSA rules.
All licensed racing groups competing for prize money MUST wear a RaceTec Chip to be eligible for a result and prize money. If any member of the racing group does not wear a RaceTec Chip, the result will not be released. No participant may compete without wearing a cycling helmet or timing chip. Only commercially produced helmets, meeting ANSI Z90/4 or Snell standards, may be worn. Gloves are recommended.
No protest will be entertained in this regard.
Licenses must be available for view at registration and on race day. No day licenses will be issued at registration. The Discovery 947 Ride Joburg 2019 Organising Committee are not responsible for the collection and return of licenses.
The Organising Committee may, at their discretion, decline an entry from anyone who is under suspension or has been banned by any sports controlling body for having used illegal drugs or any other substances; or refuse to allow anyone to participate in the race where good grounds exist for such a refusal.
Any cyclist who fails a doping test will be disqualified and receive a lifetime ban from this event.
Seeding is the process that puts cyclists of similar ability into the same starting group. It is done to ensure a
safe event and to place cyclists with others against whom they can compete enjoyably and safely.
Seeding, start groups and start times will be emailed and/or sms’d to participants and will be available from 11 October 2019 on www.947ridejoburg.co.za.
The Organising Committee will use events timed by Race Tec between 1 October 2018 and 30 September 2019 which are 90km’s or more for seeding (at the discretion of the Race Director).
Other RaceTec timed events may be considered on a merit basis, but are not considered standard seeding events, and as always if entrants can provide the Organising Committee with legitimate grounds for reseeding, the Organising Committee will consider these at a fee of R200.00 (within the prescribed period communicated to cyclists).
Cyclists who believe they have been incorrectly seeded may apply for re-seeding within the prescribed period communicated to cyclists. Re-seeding may be done at the sole discretion of the organisers who will require proof of ability in the form of official results only. A re-seeding fee of R200.00 is payable if results used are not from the qualifying RaceTec events.
A cyclist may not start or attempt to start before his/her designated start group. Any cyclist
who does so will be disqualified. No protest will be entertained in this regard.
A cyclist may move down to a slower start group (from start group ‘B’ and down only) without being
penalised. Any cyclist starting in a later start group will not qualify for any prizes in that start group.
Only the top Cycling South Africa licensed cyclists will be allowed to start in the Juvenile (U16), Junior,
U23 and Elite categories for both men and women.
The Veteran categories are further subdivided into the following Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI)
categories: 30-34 and 35-39, 40-44, 45- 49, 50-54, 55-59 and 60+. The sizes of these groups will be
limited to the best seeded cyclists per group based on their individually determined seeding index.
The U16 and Junior categories will adhere to the requirements or criteria necessary to participate in that category including restricted gears.
A rider shall not ride the route a second time after finishing unless he/she has applied to ride in a
Double Lap group (limited entries) via a registered Discovery 947 Ride Joburg charity.
No participant may sell their number or allow anyone else to ride under that number. Should a participant
be in breach of this, she/he will be immediately disqualified and banned from participating in the Discovery
947 Ride Joburg for 5 years. No protest will be entertained in this regard. A participant may organise a
substitution with the Race Office which can be done for a fee of R200.00 within the prescribed period. The
original entry fee will not be refunded. The person who is being substituted will have their number removed
from the database and a new number will be allocated. Seeding will be according to the new participant’s
individual seeding index.
Every rider shall at all times display his / her race number, pinned to the back of his/her shirt
Participants must complete the course in 6 hours or less (after last start group) in order to qualify as a
finisher and receive a medal. Participants who fail to reach the cut-off point in a specified time will be
withdrawn and will not be permitted to continue. Cyclists are expected to be able to ride at an average speed
of 18km/h. Cut-off times will be published in the race pack and will be strictly adhered to. Support services
will similarly be withdrawn for that section of the route and the route will be opened to normal traffic. Cut-off
times may be changed OR additional cut-offs may be instituted at any time should the Race Director deem it
necessary for the safety of participants. No protest will be entertained in this regard.
Participants must complete the course entirely under their own power and slipstreaming any vehicle or
motorbike is prohibited.
No participant may cause or allow any motorised or human powered machine, other than that of another participant, to follow or second him/her.
Cyclists are not permitted to participate in the Discovery 947 Ride Joburg with any live animal(s) on their bicycle or person, unless otherwise agreed to in writing by the organising committee.
Only the official licensed racing categories will be allowed support vehicles on route. Support vehicles must be accredited by the organisers and CSA. Non-accredited vehicles will be removed from the route. Support vehicles MUST drive with the safety of all cyclists, marshals and route support vehicles as a priority. Failure to do so will result in the racing team they are supporting being disqualified. All support teams must be in possession of a valid CSA manager’s license.
The routes will be as supplied and participants must familiarise themselves with the route they are riding. The Organising Committee reserve the right to alter the routes in accordance with safety, traffic, construction or other constraints. No protest relating to deviation will be entertained.
Any reasonable medical or emergency evacuation costs incurred on behalf of a rider by the Discovery 947 Ride Joburg will be for the cost of the cyclist.
A cyclist may not participate whilst under the influence of alcohol or any drug or medication that prevents or might prevent a cyclist from properly controlling his or her bicycle.
Failure to comply with any of the foregoing rules may result in disqualification. A protest committee will adjudicate any dispute, including one regarding the interpretation of these rules, and its ruling shall be final and binding. Protests must be submitted in writing within 2 hours of the finishing time to which the protest applies and be accompanied by a deposit of R200. The deposit will be refunded if the protest is upheld.
In a Charity Bond there is a minimum of 10 entrants per Charity bond. Limited Charity group entries will be accepted (Charity start groups limited to total of 4 000 cyclists). Terms and Conditions apply. Each participant with a seeding index will be allocated their start time, and all unseeded members will be seeded in the same Charity start group. Seeded cyclists may drop down to their Charity’s start time if they wish to ride together. No requests to seed unseeded cyclists earlier will be entertained. Entrants who wish to Ride For a Purpose must join their chosen Charities before entries close on 20 September 2019.
If you are entering for any person other than yourself (“third party”) then by accepting these terms and conditions, you do so being duly authorised by the third party to accept the terms and conditions on such third party’s behalf and you agree to indemnify the organisers and their representatives harmless against all claims.
Force Majeure: No entry fee shall be refunded to a participant for a cancellation of the Event due to acts of God (so called Force Majeure), which acts shall include but not be limited to adverse weather conditions, riots, strikes, political unrest and/or any other occurrence not within the control of the event organiser.
Cancellation Policy: No refund shall be given in the event that a participant cancels their entry into the event. The event organiser may consider a refund under exceptional circumstances such as illness and/or any other extraordinary circumstance. In that case, the Event organiser will evaluate a request for refund on its merits and such refund shall be at the discretion of the Event Organiser.
Waiver:Participants take part entirely at their own risk and agree that they shall have no claim whatsoever against Primedia (Pty) Ltd, its directors, employees, the Organising Committee, any individual or official, marshal, assistant, helper or agent, the sponsors or any local authority or their employees, in respect of any loss or damage whatsoever which participants may suffer arising from any injury to their person or loss or damage to their property as a result of, or arising out of, whether directly or indirectly, the participants' arrival and departure there from, attendance at registration, prize-giving or other function thereof, any loss or damage to bicycles or other equipment, however such loss or damage may arise. Persons signing this entry form as guardian of a minor hereby consent to such minor being bound by the aforegoing and further indemnify the organisers and aforementioned parties to the extent, of any, to which such minor is not capable of waiving his/her rights as stipulated above. Persons taking part in the Discovery 947 Ride Joburg as part of a team and whose entries were made on their behalf are deemed to have accepted these terms and conditions by virtue of their participation in the Discovery 947 Ride Joburg.
Indemnity:The participant agrees to abide by the Terms and Conditions and all other relevant rules of the Discovery 947 Ride Joburg, and confirms that she/he has read them, and understands that she/he takes part in the Discovery 947 Ride Joburg at his/her own risk and indemnifies the sponsors and/or organisers against any claim which may result from his/her participation. The participant further understands that it is his/her responsibility to be medically fit to take part in the Discovery 947 Ride Joburg . This indemnity applies equally to teams entering under the Terms and Conditions and any other relevant rules of entry. In entering the Discovery 947 Ride Joburg , the participant understands that the Organising Committee will take photographs of the event including participants to the event and she/he consents to such photographs being taken at the event and being used for promotional and publicity purposes at the Organising Committee’s sole discretion. The participant further understands and accepts that the photographs are and will remain the property of the sponsors and/or organisers.
If you are entering for any person other than yourself (“third party”) then by accepting these Terms and Conditions, you do so being duly authorised by the third party to accept the Terms and Conditions on such third party’s behalf and you agree to indemnify the organisers and their representatives harmless against all claims.
You agree that Primedia (Pty) Limited (“Primedia”) may collect and use your personal information for purposes of organising and managing the Discovery 947 Ride Joburg event and your participation therein, which includes sharing it with our appointed race organiser for purposes of organising and managing the event and your participation therein. Primedia and the race organiser will use and process your personal information in accordance with the Primedia Privacy Notice available at www.primedia.co.za. You agree that Primedia may share your personal information with Discovery Limited and its subsidiaries (“Discovery”) in order for them to record your participation in the race if you are a Vitality member. Discovery Vitality members shall be awarded points in accordance with the Vitality Main Rules and the Vitality points earning rules for points earning events. Discovery will use and process your personal information in accordance with its privacy statement available at https://www.discovery.co.za/corporate/terms-and-conditions/, Section B.
