An African adventure from the City of Gold

The Maboneng City Riders took their love of cycling from the streets of Johannesburg to Maseru in the first weeks of December on a cross-country adventure.

Five of the regular crew rode the 522km from Maboneng to Maseru in just over three days. It was an adventure not a race for a team that spends its days taking others exploring Joburg. The Maboneng City Riders (MCR) say they “ride to explore and create adventures”, encouraging new riders to follow them as you “never know where the journey may end”.

They meet regularly on Thursday nights at the Love Revo café on the corner of Betty and Fox Street to explore Maboneng and beyond, taking riders on a variety of rides that shows them parts of Johannesburg they may not have experienced and in a way that they will not forget. The city looks different from the saddle of a bicycle, the detail and beauty of it more stark and enjoyable. Earlier this year a group from MCR rode from Joburg to Mozambique through Swaziland. The ride to Maseru was no less memorable.

Day one, from Joburg to Heilbron, was harder than it should have been. Some attempted short cuts did not pay off and a detour to the Vaal Dam and then through Sasol in 40 degree Celsius heat meant they had to take a three-hour break from the sun. The ended up riding 191km in a day, getting into Heilbron at 10pm

On day two, they rode to Senekal in the Free State, completing 377km in two days. The weather did not play ball on the last day and just before they reached the border, heavy rain forced the group to break up, with some of them seeking refuge in Ladybrand. There they were given refuge at the Ladybrand Heritage House before the team reunited in Maseru.

You can meet the Maboneng City Riders on Thursdays, with rides leaving at 7pm with a break in between for food and drinks. All bikes and riders are welcome, although fixies are cooler. Don’t forget to take pictures. Bike rentals are available from R150, with lights and a helmet included.
