Discovery 947 MTB Ride - how we determine your start time

Each cyclist needs to be allocated a start time in order to ensure the orderly start of the event and safety on the routes of over 5 000 cyclists participating in the MTB Ride. This time is based on the rider’s ability and experience.

Seeding is the process of batching and start time allocation to each cyclist.

The chief objective of seeding is to group cyclists of a similar ability together, with the faster riders starting earlier. This minimises overtaking which is one of the main cause of accidents and also prevents congestion caused by fast riders getting stuck behind the slower ones.

Seeding is done in two parts:

  • SA Seeding indexes AND Racetec result data from between 1 October 2018 and 30 September 2019 is taken into consideration.
  • This is then used to calculate an index which enables race organisers to sort everyone into batches from fastest to slowest.
  • The seeding index works on a sliding scale, from 0 to 150, with 0 being strongest.
  • The second part is where this data is used and interpreted to assign everyone a race number, within a start group.
  • Persons with an index over 150 are seeded according to date of entry.

Please take note of the new start group sizes, these are much smaller than in previous years. You will not be seeded in the same start group as in previous years.

The reseed process allows for results (post-seeding that meet Race Organisers criteria) to be considered prior to the finalisation of the number allocation. Reseeds may be applied for from 15 October 2019 and are awarded at the discretion of the MTB Ride seeding committee, at a cost of R150. To apply, email 947ridejoburg@947.co.za
