Safe places for your kiddies to ride

If you’re not sure whether or not your child would enjoy riding a bicycle, we’re here to encourage you to give it a go!

We’ve done some research – and here are a few local spots to help get your child on their bike in a safe environment, and Discovery 947 Ride Joburg Kids Ride ready:

The PwC Bike Park in Bryanston is one of the most popular kiddies party venues, for a good reason. Pump tracks are not hugely common in Gauteng, but the one here is completely visible from the veranda outside the coffee shop. This kind of track offers a series of rollers, berms, curves and jumps that loop back on themselves and provides a great way to learn how to steer and pedal. You can also hire bikes for kids and adults who don’t have their own.

The one other place where all the benefits of a pump track can be enjoyed is on the grounds of the Eduplex Pre, Primary and High Schools to the north of Pretoria. This track was built by the world class Velosolutions constructors, so it is really interesting and well constructed. With more than 60 of the kids in the Eduplex Primary School now also cycling it offers a very good social environment if they are there. A short cross-country track has also been built, but this one is hugely technical, and only recommended for the most skilled riders in your family.

Northern Farm in Honeydew towards the north west of Johannesburg is a much better option, with a huge range of short and longer tracks leading off dirt roads and jeep tracks – more for the budding mountain biker All the tracks are clearly graded and marked, and there are enough options to have a slightly different riding experience every time, for most ages.

River Café in Sandton is worth considering. This venue is in the area around the Sandton Field and Study Centre, and offers good breakfast and lunch menus with dinner on Fridays and quite a lot of activities for kids to enjoy. The places where they can ride their bicycles are not cycling-specific or huge, but they can also move their bodies by climbing trees and playing on jungle gyms, swings, and water slides in summer.
