Know someone who’s keen to join the fun, but on a smaller scale? Say hello to the new 947 Vitality Short Ride!
Around 40 km long, it offers more people the chance to own Joburg at their own pace. Encourage your friends, family and colleagues to enter and share in your excitement at this epic event!
The 947 Vitality Short Ride will be fed onto the 94.7km route from the Athol Oaklands offramp (M1S) adjacent to Melrose Arch and will only start around 09:30 – dependant on the finalised start and seeding for the 94.7km. Timing and data from past 947 Cycle Challenges has been analysed and this shows that riders starting up to and including Group S (approx. 07:37) will have passed through the merge point at M1S Athol Oaklands, before the Short Ride commences.
Race Director Tanya Harford confirms that the experience of the 94.7km riders is paramount in our planning: “Rest assured, the Short Ride is being organised so that it does not compromise the ride experience of our many loyal 94.7km cyclists. The intention of adding the Short Ride was to open the sport of cycling to a new market and increase the number of active cyclists in Joburg. The experience of riding on a safe route and closed roads of Joburg is unique, and to share this experience with a new cycling base is critical in the growth of cycling – which has in recent years slowed down. The Short Ride will also allow a new market for Ride for a Purpose and raising money for charity which is a key driver in Ride Joburg, over R100m has been raised by charities over the past 7 years. This year over 120 charities have registered teams to Ride for a Purpose.
Harford also notes that the widths of the roads on the Ride Joburg route are wide enough to allow thousands more cyclists on the route. In 2015 when we hit a record 33 000 cyclists, there were no back-ups or bottlenecks on the route whatsoever – and in 2019, we are forecasting a maximum of 25 000 rides across both routes. We’ll share the final timing of the Short Ride once all entries are in and we have 94.7km seeding and start times.”check the route out here).
