Entering the 947 Vitality Short Ride

The Discovery 947 Ride Joburg has introduced a 40km* fun ride on Sunday 17 November 2019. The Short Ride will start at Atholl Oaklands from 09h30* and join the main route onto the M1 South, continuing along the remaining Ride Joburg route through the Kyalami Grand prix Circuit, finishing at Riversands Commercial Park. Shuttles will be available to transport finishers at staggered intervals back to the short route start. *subject to change

When will the 947 Vitality Short Ride be held?

The 947 Vitality Short Ride will be held on Sunday, 17 November 2019. This distance starts in Atholl Oaklands and finishes at Riversands Commercial Park.

How much is the entry fee?

The entry fee is R440 per person (incl 15% VAT)

When do the entries close?

Entries for the 947 Vitality Short Ride will close on Wednesday, 16 October 2019

Do I have to qualify for the 947 Vitality Short Ride?

Individual entrants do not need to qualify, however you need to be able to ride at an average of 15km/hr and finish within three hours.
At least one of the tandem entrants will need to have a tandem result timed by Racetec.

How old do you have to be to enter the Short Ride?

Participants must be older than the age of 10 years on the day of the 947 Vitality Short Ride. You can apply for exceptions for younger entrants in writing to the Race Office. An adult must accompany any entrant under 13 years of age.

What kind of bikes are allowed in the 947 Vitality Short Ride?

Any traditional bicycle or tandem bicycle that is not motorised. Recumbent bicycles and hand cycles are also allowed in certain categories. Time trial bikes are not permitted. No e-bikes allowed.

How will I be timed?

Racetec timing chips are compulsory. If you do not already have a Racetec Timing Chip one will automatically be allocated to your basket when entering online. Chips are sold at R140 (incl VAT).

When will I know my start time?

Once the seeding is finalised in mid-October your Race Number and Start Time will be sent to you by email.

How will I get my race number?

You will need to collect your race number on any of the three days before the event, at the 947 Vitality Short Ride Lifestyle Expo. Race numbers cannot be couriered or posted.

Where is number collection?

Number collection will be held from 14 to 16 November 2019 at the Ticketpro Dome in Northgate. You will be notified of the times.

What if I forget my race number at home?

No number, no ride.

How long do I have to finish 947 Vitality Short Ride?

The basis of completing the ride is six hours from the last start group however there are cut-off points along the route which you need to stay ahead of on the day. Check the website or your e-Race Brochure for the cut-off times.

What if I decide during the race that I cannot continue?

There is a sweep protocol in place on the day to return retiring cyclists to the finish venue. Tip: try to get to a waterpoint for mechanical or sweep assistance.

How early should I arrive at the venue?

Be at the venue at least an hour before your start time so that you have time to find parking and make your way to the Start. Please note that there may be traffic delays at the venue due to volumes of traffic accessing the venue.

Are there Water Points along the route?

Yes, there are nine Water Points along the 94.7km route and four Water Points on the 40km route. Each water point offers water, Coke and Powerade. Make sure you have your water bottle. Mechanics, physios, and medical support are available at the Water Points.

Are there road closures along the route?

947 Vitality Short Ride is Joburg’s safest race and full road closures will be in effect along the route.
