Enjoy the same city-spanning route as last year
In 2018, we decided to FLIP the route – and you loved it! So, in 2019, you’ll be riding the traditional route in ‘reverse’ again.
This means the cluster of steep hills that made the last 10km of the route such a grind in previous years (before 2018), will be tackled and gotten out of the way in the first 10km of the reverse route, while legs are still fresh. The 'old' climbs will be downhills, but you’ll still be challenged by needing to work where you use to freewheel.
Don’t miss the scenic cityscapes
A notable point of interest includes the landmark Nelson Mandela bridge, as you’re riding towards the CBD.
Jan Smuts through Randburg is a long downhill, but the climb from Craighall Park to Hyde Park is a tough uphill, as is the stretch past the Johannesburg Zoo. On the other hand, the M1 is a speedy set of undulating downhills, and the home stretch from the turn off Summit into Mnandi is a welcome freewheel to the finish line.
Over the past 22 years, this iconic event has contributed significantly in positioning Joburg as a destination of choice for cycling enthusiasts from around the globe. It's also helped build the City of Joburg’s reputation as a preferred host city for major sporting events.
